Trail signs & choosing terrain
Choose a run for today’s ability and conditions.
Read the local map
In many North American resorts, green circles indicate easier terrain, blue squares more difficult terrain, and black diamonds advanced terrain. Ratings are relative within a resort and are not directly comparable between mountains.
Conditions matter
Weather, snow surface, grooming and visibility can make the same run feel very different. Ask an instructor or patrol if you are unsure about a route.
Stay within boundaries
A trail rating does not indicate avalanche safety. Respect closures, ropes and area boundaries. Leave backcountry decisions to appropriately trained and equipped groups with current local forecasts.
